Music

Welcome to the Highland Music Program!

This award-winning program has been a mainstay at Highland since the school’s inception. The music program benefits from strong administrative, parent and community support. Success is also due to the longevity of the team-teaching duo that lead the music program. Dale Hallier and Nancy Cox have been team-teaching at Highland for over 20 years, and together have a wealth of experience resulting from a combined teaching career of over 50 years. Both music teachers hold Bachelor of Music degrees from the University of Victoria, and have specialized experience in both Choral and Instrumental music.

There are many opportunities to get involved in music at Highland, ranging from one of our four main Concert Bands, two Jazz Bands or Concert Choir. All groups perform locally in Christmas and Spring concerts, as well as on tour. Each Concert Band goes on an annual trip where the focus is either on festival performance, or school performances with a lighter musical focus. Trips increase in distance and length as students mature, with early trips to Victoria, Kamloops and Vancouver, and trips for Senior groups to Calgary and Edmonton, Seattle and San Francisco. Our groups perform at both competitive and non-competitive festivals, and have won both gold and silver medals at the National Music Festival.

Music is a great place to meet outstanding students, improve your grades and develop your musical talents through performance. If you are coming to Highland, be sure to be part of this exciting program.
